In a word ,culture and language are interdependent on each other. To serve the purpose of this paper, focus falls on the influence of culture on language: culture is the foundation of language. Difference between cultures leads to the difference between languages. Characteristic of one culture produce particularity of one language. 3. Dynamic variables of culture and International Business From the above, we know that the culture depends on the language ,and language is important in gathering and evaluating information;it provides access to local society; language capability is increasingly important in company communications,whether within the corporate family or with channel members;languages provides more than the ability to communicate.It extends beyond mechanics to the interpretation of contexts. Language is one defining characteristic of a culture.It has both a spoken and an unspoken dimension. International business should understand the local language(s).Otherwise,some major blunder can be made. The following are some examples of improper translation.For example, the Sunbean Corporation used the English words for its “Mist—Stick” mist-producing hair curing iron when it entered the German market,only to discover after an expensive advertising campaign that mist means excrement in German. General Motors was troubled by the lack of enthusiasm among Puerto Rican dealers for its new Chevrolet Nova.When literally translated into Spanish,Nova means“it doesn’t go”. General Motors changed the name of the car to Caribe. English terms used in the United Kingdom and the United States usually have different meanings. For example,in negotiations,for U.S.delegations,“tabling a proposal”means that they want to delay a decision,while their British counterparts understand the expression to mean that immediate action is to be taken. If the British promise something“by the end of the day,” this does not mean within 24 hours,but rather when they have completed the job.Additionally,they may say that negotiations “bombed”, meaning that they were a success,which to an American could convey exactly the opposite message. |
